ABOUT THE BOYS’ LATIN SCHOOL OF MARYLAND

Founded in 1844, Boys’ Latin School of Maryland is an all-boys private school serving boys in grades K-12. At Boys’ Latin, each and every one of their students is known — for who he is today, and all he will be tomorrow.  Their K-12 family is small by design, because nearly two centuries of all-boys education has taught them that a close community builds a foundation of confidence. Of compassion. Of curiosity. And of character.

Educational Philosophy

At Boys’ Latin, they set ever-higher standards for all of their students, so every boy can learn, and earn, the rewards of hard work. Here, they meet the needs of each boy, from the strongest learners who require extra challenges to those who require more support. And here, a bright Kindergartner can arrive as an emerging reader, and leave as a Presidential Scholar — with a curriculum and community that has fueled his intellect every step of the way. They intentionally teach boys to think critically, question assumptions, and work collaboratively. So, whether their boys are challenging each other to build a championship-winning robot, collaborating on a multivariate calculus problem or debating current events, they are building the 21st-century skills they need to succeed in life.

Extensive research shows that boys learn differently from girls, and that boys learn best when their unique interests and distinctive talents are taken into account. Boys’ Latin honors how boys think and learn by leveraging what motivates them, and they prioritize hands-on experiential learning that appeals to different senses, involves action and movement, and produces tangible outcomes.

Finally, when the Lakers are ready to leave the grounds, the college counselors leverage their deep understanding of each boy’s unique interests and gifts to help him find schools that are right for him. For some, that means an Ivy League college or a large research university. For others, it’s a service academy or liberal arts college. For all, it’s about finding schools where he will continue to be challenged and happy.

Students go on to be successful engineers, journalists, entrepreneurs and much more. But the true mark of a Laker is that he is simply himself — confident in who he is, and ready to make his mark on the world.

Unique School Characteristics

What makes Boys’ Latin unique is their culture and their community. There, no boy ever stands alone. He builds the confidence to take on the world because he’s supported by one of its most powerful forces: a lifelong, caring community. With an average class size of 13, teachers get to know each boy, learning what drives him, what books he loves, and what his favorite part of the school day is. Their purposefully small size means that as the boys discover the wonders of science or the rigors of writing, they discover what community means. And how to build it. They leverage the power of a small community to create a big stage for their boys. Because unlike larger schools where students compete for limited spots on teams, in plays, or within student government, Boys’ Latin creates space. Space for boys to explore new talents, and invent new clubs of their own. Space for many leaders, rather than just a few.

School Traditions

On the first day of school, the entire Boys’ Latin community comes together for convocation. Opening Convocation begins with every senior walking hand-in-hand with one of the youngest lower-school students. They welcome those new to Boys’ Latin as the Headmaster kicks off the school year. It’s a tradition that underscores the seamless connections between classes and among BL generations.

In the spring of every year, each division comes together for its own Maroon & White Day – a spirited field day, full of friendly competition. From the egg toss to tug-of-war to the classic dodge ball game, it is a day for the boys to compete with one another in the tradition of winning the day for your team. As everyone participates, it’s no surprise that Maroon & White Days are among the most cherished memories for all the boys!

Every school year ends much like it begins, with seniors entering Closing Convocation holding the hands of one of the youngest lower school students as they did during Opening Convocation. The seniors remain with the lower schoolers as students celebrate the accomplishments of one another and the faculty at this all-school awards assembly. Then, the seniors change into their new college gear as they come together for Senior Farewell, where each senior says their final emotional farewell one-by-one to every freshman, sophomore, junior, administrator, teacher and coach in the upper school. Parents take up any available wall space and patiently wait their turn to tell each boy what he means to them.

Campus and Facilities

Boys’ Latin’s campus stretches on both the north and south side of Lake Avenue – that’s why they are called the Lakers. The 72 acres of rolling countryside provide the perfect place for boys to learn and grow. More than ten buildings feature state-of-the-art classrooms, quiet spaces for independent study, a library per division, dedicated fine arts and performing arts centers, and athletic facilities.

On January 16, 2020, Boys’ Latin finalized the purchase of 28 acres that adjoin their South Campus from the Society of St. Joseph (the Josephites). This rolling hillside and associated structures provide Boys’ Latin with a once in a lifetime opportunity, nearly doubling the School’s total footprint while also creating space and flexibility. The existing St. Joseph Manor is in the process of being transformed into an expansive state of the art residential living facility that will house 40 boarding students and several faculty residences. Boys’ Latin will open Baltimore’s only seven-day boarding program for boys beginning fall 2021. The acquired property, which increases the School’s campus by 70%, will also enable Boys’ Latin to offer a wealth of hands-on outdoor learning opportunities, serving as an outdoor classroom for students across the entire school.

Class Offerings

BL’s lower school curriculum is focused on hands-on, experiential learning. Boys may embark on culinary adventures to understand metrics, take scooter tours to measure speed or raise trout to learn about ecosystems. Each grade focuses on a different BL value such as courage, compassion, and integrity, ensuring the character education is woven into their community and curriculum. In the middle school, the faculty guides students through a challenging, but carefully calibrated curriculum that emphasizes self-discovery. In doing so, the boys have myriad opportunities to strengthen their confidence, build critical skills, and collaborate with their peers. Whether it’s playing guitar, experimenting and creating in the Innovation Program, or taking an advanced math class in the upper school, Boys’ Latin middle school students are always challenged and provided opportunities to explore new interests and talents.

In the upper school, each student is taught to think critically, problem solve, and demonstrate good character in preparing him for life and leadership within a dynamic, ever-changing world. BL offers 42 honors and AP courses in all disciplines. More than half of BL seniors are enrolled in calculus or higher, and multi-variable calculus is a permanent offering in the math department. Students also have the opportunity to explore their interests and passions through a wide range of elective courses. Options abound, from creative writing, poetry and genre studies to literary journalism, museum curatorship and African-American history to name a few.

At Boys’ Latin, they leverage the power of a small community. They encourage students to explore an incredibly wide range of interests on the journey to becoming his best most authentic self. They present more than 70 different club and co-curricular offerings so students can test their skills, learn new perspectives, explore new communities and gain confidence to lead. Opportunities range from debate, drama, mock trial and Model UN to the Inkwell student newspaper, robotics, digital media club and more.

Boys’ Latin also has a proud athletic tradition. Their middle and upper school students compete on 44 teams in 12 different interscholastic sports, including football, soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, ice hockey, squash, wrestling, lacrosse, baseball, golf and tennis. Sports and athletics at Boys’ Latin are an extension of the academic day. The character building and development that are demanded and expected in all divisions of the school are also reinforced and expected on the athletic field.

In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of community service endeavors throughout their BL experience, with each graduate providing an average of 80 hours of community service.
