ABOUT THE CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

Cambridge School is a classical, Christ-centered (K-8) community of learners, which exists to partner with parents to educate the hearts and minds of children in both virtue and truth. Cambridge School seeks to develop in our students the capacity and character required to live out their God-given destinies as they proceed to high school and beyond.

Cambridge School

Educational Philosophy

Cambridge School is classical, Christ-centered, and integral. Children are born with a sense of wonder and awe about the world around them; we draw on this curiosity, spark the imagination, and ignite a passion for learning which lasts a lifetime. We value children as persons created in God’s image, not empty minds to be filled. Children learn best when they can experience the relationships between subject matters in a way that reflects “the big picture,” not isolated bits of information. At Cambridge, we create space to absorb and ponder. We relive historical events and identify with the characters of a book. Through a sense of wonder our students learn and make connections. We inspire children’s imaginations by immersing them in time-tested, rich literature, history, art, and music within an environment where students are encouraged to question and explore. As genuine questions emerge and students examine truth that transcends history, they are transformed from passive participants into engaged and interested learners.

Cambridge School

Unique School Characteristics

The integral nature of our curriculum distinguishes us. Children learn best when they see for themselves the inter-connectedness between subject matters and their world, not through isolated bits of information. You are probably familiar with the age-old student question “When are we ever going to have to know this?” Our students understand how everything they learn is a part of the bigger picture, and they have a greater appreciation for each subject. Think of it as the difference between eating a delicious slice of cake as opposed to eating each ingredient separately.

Cambridge School

School Traditions

Highlights of a Cambridge education include: Learning Expo and Literature Fest, performing Shakespeare in fifth grade, and a culminating trip to serve in Mexico in eighth grade.

Campus and Facilities

We are positioned in the heart of Baltimore County and draw students from Baltimore City to northern Baltimore County. This adds to the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of students and families. In early 2019, we purchased our own campus property at the former Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church at Woodbrook, and we are enjoying spreading out across and utilizing 7 acres of beautiful space off of Charlest St.

Class Offerings

Our kindergarten is an atmosphere in which playfulness and creativity are as much a part of the learning as reading and math. Kindergarteners get knee-high and elbow-deep in science projects, trek through various landscapes while on field trips, and literally bring stories to life through plays and performances.

Units in the early grades emphasize a hands-on, multi-sensory approach. These years are focused on inquiry and wonder, which are vital components of becoming life-long learners. The strong foundation in reading and math prepares our students well for the next phase in a Cambridge education – the classical history approach. History is taught chronologically. Studies of literature, science, Bible, art, music, and writing all stem from the themes explored in the historical timeframe. Literature and writing increase in scope and depth during the middle grades. Students build strong communication skills, a staple of a classical education, and are given opportunities to express themselves through formal speeches, class discussions, and writing assignments. Our classes venture out for at least one field trip each month, and all are covered by the cost of tuition. They “apprentice” at a glass-blowing studio to experience how medieval tradesmen learned their crafts. They even perform Shakespearean scenes at Folger Theatre!

The study of American history begins in sixth grade and continues chronologically through eighth grade. The focus shifts to longer projects, more independent work, and a schedule of classes that varies by day of the week. Students also choose from a variety of languages to study through their middle school years. Our students look forward to delivering their graduating speeches to an audience of a few hundred people!

Cambridge School

Extracurriculars

While theater and music are built into the school day at Cambridge as integral components of education, we offer many clubs and sports, including cross country, soccer, basketball, and flag football.

What would prospective parents and students be surprised to know about your school?

We view parents as the primary educators of children. Parent partnership is critical to the life of our school, and we rely on and thrive when we can pull from the vast talents and gifts of parents.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Dawn S.

Our kids are incredible, complex beings. Little souls with hearts and passions and enormous questions about the world, from the kindergartner who wants to know about metamorphosis to the eighth grader wondering how a good God could allow the Holocaust to occur. Cambridge is a place where your child will discover the answers to both of those questions, and the thousands upon thousands of questions in between those two grades. It will be done with sound knowledge and keen instruction, but most importantly, Cambridge will do it by seeing your child’s heart through the eyes of God. We have entrusted all five of our kids to this school because they see our children as whole beings and work tirelessly to educate them in the truth of God’s word, in the beauty of His created world, and in understanding the depths of His community.

Throughout my years at Cambridge, I’ve had great experiences inside the classroom, but it’s the awesome field trips I’ll remember most. From biking through Gettysburg to the opportunity to go to Mexico, I’ve gotten to go out and do the things we talk about at school.
