ABOUT THE ST. PAUL’S SCHOOLS

St. Paul’s School, St. Paul’s School for Girls, and St. Paul’s Pre and Lower School share a 120-acre campus, an Episcopal affiliation, and a mission to develop the intellect and character of our students. The histories of the schools are deeply intertwined, resulting in a long-standing, family-like relationship.

St. Paul’s School educates boys grades 5 – 12, St. Paul’s School for Girls educates girls grades 5 – 12, and St. Paul’s Pre and Lower School educates boys and girls from infants through grade 4. This is a unique model where boys and girls are taught together and separately at just the right times in their development.

Educational Philosophy

At St. Paul’s Pre and Lowe School, we believe the goals of education are to sharpen the mind, ennoble the spirit, and challenge the body. We inspire and educate so that students can achieve their best in academic, artistic, athletic, and extracurricular endeavors. We teach students to question, consider, test, evaluate, and then question again, as we lead them to confront the moral and intellectual challenges of the modern world and embrace lives of learning.

At SPSG, we believe that it is the small decisions our girls practice every day, with loving and wise guidance from faculty, that build into big decisions for themselves and their community. Through our extensive connections and alumnae network, we provide unparalleled learning through independent projects, professional internships, community service, and nonprofit partnerships. We’re developing confident young women who are ready to take on what matters most, from physics to philosophy and medicine to management.

St. Paul’s School students are explorers. Every day they find limitless opportunities to pursue existing passions and to uncover interests and talents they never knew they possessed. They achieve excellence, guided by dedicated faculty who know all of our students as individuals and are dedicated to helping them achieve at their highest possible level. By the time St. Paul’s students are ready for college, they are equipped to gain acceptance into highly competitive schools. More important, they are ready to thrive during their collegiate studies and beyond.

Unique School Characteristics

At The St. Paul’s Schools, students benefit from learning in a small-school environment with the unparalleled opportunities that only a large campus can provide. Students of all ages feel safe to stretch their capabilities while being inspired by the presence of older students and mentors. As students mature, they have greater flexibility to explore new interests and additional opportunities to bond with faculty from across the campus. As a result, our students celebrate victories both big and small. They see the possibilities in themselves and the world around them, a skill they will internalize for life.

School Traditions

On the first day of school, each year our kindergarten and senior classes join together to plant a tree. Throughout the school year, we have a number of beloved traditions including the 1st-grade butterfly release, 2nd-grade Kapok Tree performance, 3rd Maypole Celebration, Lower School Musical, holiday storytime with the Headmaster, and the International Block Party.

A longstanding and highly-spirited SPSG tradition revolves around Green & White Competitions. When each student enters SPSG, she is assigned to either the green team or white team and will spend her time at SPSG engaging in a variety of fun, community-building competitions, ranging from dance-offs to “Fun Friday” events. In addition, students anxiously await the first day of school, where faculty, staff, and our very own bagpiper welcome students back to campus as they are dropped off in carpool. Lastly, a time-honored tradition to which all students look forward is the Senior Speech, enabling each senior to share a personal talk on the topic of her choosing at morning Prayers.

St. Paul’s School has many traditions the boys hold dear and that alumni remember for a lifetime. At the beginning of each year, the seniors paint a mural on the side of the athletic center with their class motto. The annual sophomore Kinsolving trips are one-in-a-lifetime experiences that offer growth opportunities unique to each boy. Every year, the varsity lacrosse team takes on their 100+-year rival BL and the whole campus rallies around the team during the most spirited week and game of the year.

Campus and Facilities

Located in the courtyard at the center of the Lower School building, the St. Paul’s Community Garden is a space to nurture bodies and minds and foster educational adventures for students in all divisions. The Community Garden features a pond, greenhouse, chicken coop, ducks, composting area, and native and non-native animals and plants. The garden enhances our integrated curriculum, provides summer activities, allows for campus-wide involvement in all service projects, and furthers the Green Committee’s goals.

SPSG is situated on 46 bucolic, beautiful acres, providing safety and security for students and campus visitors alike, as well as ample parking around campus. SPSG is a certified Green School, emphasizing a focus on ecological responsibility amongst students and staff alike. Our main building comprises 78,000 square feet, including 34 classrooms, the Crane Library, a dance studio, and the Commons, a social space for students. We have four athletic fields, four tennis courts, and a 26,000-square-foot gymnasium. Shared by all schools, the Ward Center for the Arts houses a 320-person theater, as well as the shared cafeteria, one of two dining options for SPSG girls. The Gator Cafe, located in the Commons, is a second option for students to dine within the main building.

The 3,600-square-foot Nature Pavilion provides an outdoor learning space where our community can interact with nature, teach outdoor skills, explore problem-solving, enhance teamwork, develop leadership skills, understand natural elements, and promote spirituality. The facility includes a large covered classroom, stone fireplace, climbing wall, and wifi. The facility is being used for science classes, field study, buddy gatherings between divisions, green woodworking, physical education, leadership training, outdoor assemblies and chapel services, alumni gatherings, class picnics and activities, social events, and more. The facility also includes a ropes course that is used by all divisions.

St. Paul’s School is in the process of building a 60,000-square-foot new Upper School building that will incorporate three student commons, an expanded learning center, central atrium, and state-of-the-art labs for engineering, biology, chemistry, and physics. The building is designed to foster the supportive relationships and unique learning opportunities that are at the heart of the St. Paul’s experience. atrium, and state-of-the-art labs for engineering, biology, chemistry, and physics.

Class Offerings

St. Paul’s Preschool hands-on, creative, and integrated opportunities for infants through three-year-olds and has built-in flexibility to keep each boy and girl engaged. Lower School students study English, Mathematics, History, Modern Language (Spanish and Japanese), Art, Music, Library, Physical Education, and innovating learning in The Hub, their Immersive Science and Innovation Lab.

SPSG emphasizes the importance of experiential learning throughout a student’s education – whether working in the outdoor classroom for Earth Sciences, deep-diving into 18th-century life with a museum curator while studying Jane Eyre, or taking virtual tours of Egypt during Humanities. Our students are up and out of their seats regularly – completing math equations at the board, meeting in writing workshop groups to review essays, and working in our Maker Space to build kinetic sculptures. Upper school students can take a full suite of Advanced Placement courses in preparation for college, and all students will earn credits in the arts, such as music, dance, theatre, or visual art, most of which include a performance component.

St. Paul’s School Upper School offers an excellent education, utilizing a rigorous, creative, and collaborative approach that encourages students to think deeply and act decisively in the world. With its emphasis on critical thinking, intensive student-faculty interaction, and development of the whole person, the renowned International Baccalaureate (IB) Program – offered in Grades 11 and 12 – is a fitting culmination of the St. Paul’s educational experience. More than 75 courses at all levels of academic challenge – including 28 IB offerings – are available. Dozens more courses are available in coordination with St. Paul’s School for Girls.

St. Paul’s Middle School curriculum is designed so that each boy can develop a strong work ethic and academic resiliency that will lead to ongoing academic success. Throughout the middle school years, each student is supported by dedicated teacher-mentors well-versed in the challenges unique to boys. There are many essential aspects to a middle school experience: academics, athletics, arts, chapel, friendships/social learning, character building/leadership opportunities, responsibility, and learning organizational skills and processes. The St. Paul’s Middle School is not about any single one of these elements; it is about all of them.

Extracurriculars

St. Paul’s Pre and Lower School partners with working and busy parents to provide before- and after-school programs, with free care beginning at 7:30 every morning. A broad array of additional activities, including music, dance, sports, yoga, and more, is available every day until 6 p.m. for a nominal fee.
Students at St. Paul’s and SPSG has a robust offering of extracurricular programming, including more than 80 athletic teams and coordinated arts programming in theatre, visual art, dance, and music. Students have the ability to join clubs from an offering of more than 40 clubs focused upon cultural awareness, outreach, or art. In connection with our Episcopal values, all students will complete at least 60 hours of community service prior to graduation, which they can fulfill in a variety of ways.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Sarah Cicero

St. Paul’s has been a wonderful fit. Coming from a public school Dominic has truly benefited from having smaller class sizes, individual attention and tremendous academic support. It’s just been perfect.
