A GLANCE AT TOWSON UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY DANCE

As the outreach arm of Towson University’s Department of Dance, TUCD emphasizes a strong technical foundation, while always celebrating the joy inherent in dance and movement. Their children’s program is an introductory study of dance technique offered to establish a fundamental love of the art of dance. These classes provide students with the basis of classical training, as well as self-expression and creativity.

Their teachers are amazing! They hire only the most capable faculty to make sure your children’s dance experience is always fun but rooted in sound technique.

Their facilities are exceptional. They’re very lucky to be housed within the Towson University Department of Dance, whose facilities feature state-of-the-art studios and lots of natural light.

They care about our families. A large percentage of their older dancers started with us when they were small children. They pride themselves on getting to know each child by name and being transparently communicative with parents.

They do what’s best for our dancers. Where many studios offer a glitzy, performance-based experience for young dancers, they emphasize classroom time, building technique through recognized methods and never rush a child to a level for which he/she is unprepared.

CLASSES

They offer classes on a semester basis during the school year (fall = September to December, spring = January to June). During the summer, they offer day camps for younger dancers ages 4-8 and evening classes for dancers ages 9 and up.

During the regular school year, dancers between ages 3 and 5 take age-specific classes designed to instill the basics of dance in a fun, literacy-based curriculum. Beginning at age 6, dancers can take technique classes in ballet, jazz, tap, and/or hip hop.

TU Community Dance has a 100% higher-ed placement rate among dancers interested in pursuing dance at the college/university level.
Current TUCD faculty have had performing careers ranging from the Shanghai Ballet to Destiny’s Child music videos.

ACCESSIBILITY & PARKING INFORMATION

The majority of TUCD’s young children’s classes take place on Saturday mornings. On Saturdays, parking is free and plentiful on Cross Campus Drive outside our entrance. On weeknights, parking can be trickier, but it is available for a small fee. The Center for the Arts is a large, public building with ramps that make strollers easy. The restrooms have changing stations, the lobby has ample seating, and there’s free public WiFi.
